|Description||We look for work that is fresh, well written, accessible, and diverse, as we take pride in producing a beautiful journal that can be enjoyed by a wide audience. We look for three things in a submission: surprise (not in terms of twist endings, but in terms of surprising voices, observations, textures, and also surprising choices in where stories start and stop), confidence (a cohesive, effective style, conscious stylistic/linguistic/narrative decisions), and truth (characters and settings that not only feel true to life, but also true to themselves; not necessarily likeable, or even realistic, but alive and singular). Please send no more than five poems or 5 pages of poetry, or 5,000 words of short fiction or nonfiction. We accept literary nonfiction – personal essays, travel essays, profiles, creative reportage, etc. In other words, we are not seeking to publish hard criticism and analysis, or pieces that take a distinctly academic approach.|
